One of the worst things about not living in Melbourne (apart from everything) is that I have to cram my #MICF experience in to a set amount of time, rather than over the whole four weeks of the festival.
This is such a challenge, I like to book early to make sure I don't miss out the shows I really want to see; but also because I know it puts comedians minds at rest when they see early sales during the time they're still polishing (writing) their new festival season shows.
What this meant last year, the first time I went to #MICF is that some shows got announced after I'd already locked down my schedule. Also, due to budgeting, some shows I really want to attend get announced before I can afford to book and they sell out before I even have a chance to get a ticket.
Both these things happened for me this year again.
The much anticipated arrival of Dave Anthony and Gary (Gareth) Reynold's runaway success American history podcast The Dollop was one I was really looking forward to. There are two shows as part of the Sydney Comedy Festival at my favourite live comedy venue The Comedy Store, sold out before I had funds to buy tickets and the two at #MICF will be on after I'm in town. I expect that TOFOP / FOFOP and a TOFOP & Walking the Room SuperPod will be announced well after I've locked in the majority of my tickets.
Yesterday, after I'd booked 15 show tickets, I saw the legendary Adam Hills announce his Clown Heart shows at #MICF. Either I hadn't been paying attention in the weeks leading up to my scheduling day or this was a late announcement. Either way, I can't fit seeing the show in to any of the 10 days I'll be in town this year, so I'll have to wait and see if something appears in Sydney.
I've doubled the amount of time I'm in town for the festival this year and I still can't fit everything in, I'm also aware that after last year I promised myself I'd keep the schedule less structured and go to the Town Hall every night. I really wanted to scan the chalk boards and banter with the throng of comedians and their friends flyering, to make sure I saw shows I hadn't heard of before - but FOMO got the better of me again and I had to lock in my shows (20 so far) early. Hopefully in 2016, I'll be in a job where I can work from Melbourne for the whole 4 weeks and these problems will all be non-existent.
Ho Hum - There's always the Sydney Comedy Festival to catch any that I've missed!
