Josh Earl's Square Peg is joyful and positive and funny right from the start. The mix of original song, narrative based stand up and skits create an engaging show.
Centered on the idea of never really fitting in, the narrative runs from Earl's childhood in small town Tasmania through to moving to Melbourne, fatherhood and the crazy world of Australian TV.
The transitions between song and narrative aren't always as fluid as they could be, but overall the mix of all the elements Josh has included in this show work seamlessly. There's also some treats of 90's trivia and nostalgia especially for anyone who was a teen during that era. My age can certainly be determined by the technique Josh shares in the show - look out for it.
The exploration of what it means to be a man in modern Australia when you're 'different' doesn't seem like fertile ground for humour but Josh has skilfully managed to find the laughs in both his narrative and original songs . There's some lovely sentiments wrapped around the show that will make even the most cynical festival goer smile and nod in agreement. Over all, the show is great fun and you should make time to see it.
