Wednesday is the day it all kicks off down at MICF. Comedians polishing up their material and getting ready for a successful 4 weeks at the festival.
The festival starts for me on Saturday, with my first gig being a live iLove Green Guide Letters. So that will be two weekends in a row I spend with Steele Saunders - today's live podcast in Sydney was so great - I didn't think it could get any more out of control than the Adelaide Fringe live Ep - I was way off. It prompted me to start planning my Sydney Comedy Festival in earnest too - especially to see the Tech Savvy, Chris Wainhouse in his 2015 show @ The Internet.
But back to MICF - Tomorrow night is 'the Gala' airing on Channel 10 8:30PM - this year's host is Joel Creasy recent escape from the jungle. I know even though they appear on it, most comedians don't really love the Gala, but for many visitors to MICF and even other state comedy festivals, this is the way they get to see at least a few acts they didn't previously know about.
I'm so excited about my festival trip this year if not a little daunted by the challenge I set myself! Which was not just the attending of over 30 shows, but reviewing as many of them as I can.
I already had some pretty firm plans on what I wanted to do, but a recent article 'Reviewing Comedy Reviewers' by Simon Keck solidified the final framework for my reviews.
Simon's top tips for reviewers pretty much describe the things I'm trying to avoid, with a few good pointers on how to make my reviews (hopefully) good and useful to other festival goers. There are some extras that I want to include which are more hints and tips for first time festival goers - like I was last year.
After workshopping a few ideas with a friend I finally landed on a rating system - stick with what you know - finally HR skills are actually coming in handy!
★★★★★ - Exceeds Expectations
★★★★ - Consistently Great
★★★ - Meets Expectations
★★ - Below Expectations
★ - Avoid
OK - I hope they make sense and I hope I get to use only 4s and 5s - cause this HR nerd isn't forcing a bell curve on this week of hilariousness...
See you in Melbourne Chickas.
